Trauma & Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma can affect people after experiences that overwhelm their ability to cope or feel safe. Responses may be emotional, physical, relational, or behavioral, and they can change over time.

Trauma responses are not all the same

Some people experience vivid memories, panic, numbness, irritability, shame, sleep problems, or a strong startle response. Others notice avoidance, difficulty trusting, physical tension, or feeling disconnected. These reactions can occur with or without a PTSD diagnosis.

What trauma-informed care means

Trauma-informed care emphasizes safety, choice, collaboration, transparency, and respect for the client's pace. It does not mean every session focuses on the traumatic event. Often, treatment also includes coping skills, relationships, sleep, routines, and present-day goals.

Questions to ask a provider

  • What experience do you have with concerns like mine?
  • What trauma treatments or approaches do you use?
  • How do you decide when someone is ready for trauma processing?
  • What happens if I become overwhelmed during treatment?
