Lower-Cost Mental Health Care

Cost can be one of the biggest barriers to mental health care. There are several ways to look for more affordable support without assuming that one option works for everyone.

Insurance and employee benefits

Start by checking behavioral-health benefits, deductibles, copays, telehealth coverage, and whether your plan offers an employee assistance program or other short-term counseling benefit.

Sliding-scale and reduced-fee options

Some private practices adjust fees based on income or financial circumstances. Community mental health centers, nonprofit clinics, university training clinics, and supervised graduate programs may also offer lower-cost services.

Ask about the full cost

When comparing providers, ask about session fees, billing frequency, cancellation charges, insurance claims, out-of-network reimbursement, and whether reduced-fee slots are currently available.
